Dear UT Community,
An increase in violent crime in Austin in recent months has renewed concerns in our community about safety in areas around campus. Last week, two UT students were victims in a stabbing spree on 6th Street. Very fortunately, they are both recovering well, and the Austin Police Department quickly apprehended a suspect.
Incidents like this serve as a reminder that we must remain focused on keeping members of the UT community safe.
Since 2016, we have significantly bolstered security on campus, including increasing the size of the University of Texas Police Department force. UTPD coordinates daily with local and state law enforcement on safety in the areas around campus, including West Campus.
I am working closely with UT System Board of Regents Chairman Kevin Eltife to obtain additional funding to do even more to improve coordination. We are currently developing a plan to hire additional police officers, expand patrols, and upgrade security-related technology in West Campus. We will have more details in the coming days and weeks.
To our students, please take normal precautions and be aware of your surroundings when you go out — especially at night. Be sure to let friends and others know where you are and where you’re going. If you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation and need to get home swiftly and safely, you can always call a car through our Night Rides program.
In the days ahead, please be aware of your safety as you keep our injured students in your thoughts. Thank you to all who have expressed concern and support.
Sincerely,
Gregory L. Fenves
President
