Dear UT Community,
Earlier today, we learned that two additional members of our UT community have tested positive for COVID-19 (coronavirus), including the first UT student. Unfortunately, we expect that many more cases will be detected during the coming days and weeks.
This is a deeply unsettling time for all of us. I know that so many of you are very concerned about your health and, especially, the well-being of those in your life and our community who are most vulnerable to the virus. Please know that our staff members are working tirelessly to provide support to all who need it.
Individuals identified as having had potential exposure to the new COVID-19 patients will be directly notified by public health officials in coordination with Austin Public Health. The second patient who tested positive for COVID-19 is School of Undergraduate Studies Dean Brent Iverson (who has given permission to release his name). Dean Iverson has been in self-isolation since Friday and reports that he is feeling well.
With these confirmed cases today, the impact of COVID-19 could not be clearer. It is here in Austin and within our university community, and we must act — through social distancing and other preventive measures — and do our part to limit its effects.
I have been inspired and impressed by the many ways our university community has come together and supported one another thus far. Let’s keep it up.
Please stay safe and vigilant. We are all in this together.
