I am writing to let you know I have appointed Vice President for Research Dan Jaffe to serve as interim executive vice president and provost, beginning May 18. I want to thank Dr. Jaffe for stepping up to serve in this crucial role for UT, especially as the university is responding to the COVID-19 crisis. He will take over for Provost Maurie McInnis, who is leaving on May 15 to become president of Stony Brook University.
Dan has been a faculty member in the Astronomy Department since 1986 and served for four years as department chair. As vice president for research since 2016, he has elevated the university’s research efforts, introduced the Bridging Barriers program and increased interdisciplinary research.
He has a deep understanding of UT Austin’s academic operations and has worked closely with deans, campus leaders and many faculty members. Dan has provided exceptional leadership as we have transitioned to online learning this semester, and he will continue to do so when we begin our return to normal operations later this year.
After his service as interim provost, Dan will return to his current role as vice president for research. During this transition period, I am also pleased to announce that Alison Preston has agreed to serve as interim vice president for research. Dr. Preston is director of UT’s Biomedical Imaging Center and a faculty member in the departments of Psychology and Neuroscience. She is a highly acclaimed researcher on the neurobiology of human memory.
Please join me in thanking Dan and Alison for their service to The University of Texas.
