Dear UT Community,
For generations, The University of Texas at Austin has thrived because of its commitment to free speech and an open exchange of ideas. Our campus is a hub for people to gather and share different perspectives and experiences. This freedom is a constitutional right that has always been the foundation upon which students learn and faculty members teach and conduct research.
Earlier this year, the 86th Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 18, which makes outdoor areas at state universities open to the public for speech and expression. Starting on September 1, most outdoor spaces on the UT campus will be available to the general public for these purposes, and the university has adopted new policies in conformance with the law.
UT students, staff and faculty members and invited guests continue to have the rights of free expression they have always held on our campus. Community members and visitors alike cannot interfere with those who exercise their First Amendment rights. Campus buildings, including classrooms, will continue to be used solely by members of the UT community, and existing policies will remain in place to support our educational mission.
For additional information about the new policies, please see the Frequently Asked Questions page.
Sincerely,
Gregory L. Fenves
President
