Dear Longhorns,

Over the past 24 hours, I have been reminded how incredible Longhorn Nation is. You have come together with compassion and strength in response to the horrific tragedy this past weekend in downtown Austin. As deeply painful and personal as this is for all of us — and it will continue to be difficult in the weeks ahead — I am grateful for the support and acts of love that I have witnessed by so many.

Today, it was confirmed that among those who lost their lives is one UT student. A child of loving parents. A loyal friend to many. A Longhorn preparing to change the world. It is devastating, and I know all of us are grieved by this horrible news and we will remember her.

You may have also learned today that a number of our students sustained injuries during the attack. Some of these are very serious and we are hoping for the best outcomes, while others are on the path to recovery. I have met with many of these families and will continue to pray for them. All of the families, friends, and loved ones affected by this tragedy will need time for grief and healing, and we offer them our full support.

Along with the wellbeing of our students, I want you to know that campus safety and the security of all Longhorns remain our top priority. You will see increased police patrols across the University and in the West Campus neighborhood going forward. As always, UTPD officers are patrolling, providing support, answering questions, and responding to concerns day and night.

Understanding the gravity of our grief, and with so many unanswered questions, I want to make sure you know that you have numerous places you can turn for confidential help, hope, and healing. Please do not hesitate to contact the 24/7 UT crisis line at 512-471-2255 or TimelyCare, which is also available 24/7. Also, Student Outreach and Support is available to assist you at 512-471-5017, and the Counseling and Mental Health Center is open from Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm to meet you at your point of need. For faculty and staff, our Employee Assistance Program offers support and stress response through individual counseling, group support sessions, guidance for managers, and other important resources. They are here to assist all of you as we walk together through the aftermath of this tragedy.

In moments like this, we show our strength by coming together. Longhorns always look out for Longhorns. We lift each other up when we need it most. Now is one of those times.

Thank you for all you do for our University. I am confident that, together, we will find light through this darkness that presently surrounds us.

Sincerely,

Jim Davis
President
